Scosche passPORT Home Dock gives new life to old iPod docks
Posted Feb 23rd 2009 6:19PM by Darren Murph
Let's get one thing straight right now -- Scosche isn't actually selling an iPod dock here. What it is pitching, however, is an adapter that'll add new life to your aged iPod sound system. Much like the automotive passPORT announced earlier this year, the passPORT Home Dock charging adapter was specifically designed to fix the charging error associated with several iPod docking stations and enables charging for the iPhone 3G, iPod touch Gen 2, and iPod nano Gen 4. In other words, it allows these newer devices to charge even in older docks that don't support USB 5-volt charging. Of course, you better really love your existing dock, 'cause this adapter alone is pegged at $39.99. A nice demonstration vid is after the break if you're having a typical case of the Mondays.

The issue isn't that the iphone won't fit in my onkyo dock (for example), its that it doesn't like it. Says it won't work with the iphone even though it clearly fits. Since this dock cost $130 and interfaces directly with my home receiver it might be worth it to buy an adapter.

Has somebody made something to turn all of these pointless iPoop docks into Bluetooth receivers? Just a little something that can plug into that slot and let any Stereo Bluetooth device send music to it?
(I won't spend the time pointing out how obviously lame it is to consider a docking adapter for an iPod Dock as news worthy. Slow news day?)

Yes - search Ebay for "Insignia Bluetooth Receiver". Oddly enough this dongle was made by BestBuy, but I don't think it is still in their stores.
Product page is here:

I have the automotive passPORT. Works exactly like it should, enables my Alpine car stereo to charge my iPhone 3G.

I was contemplating buying the car adapter but ive heard from many reviews online that it wont work with pioneer decks. Do you know anyone with a pioneer car stereo with the adapter?

I wonder if they could make one that lets a Zune or a Sansa work in an iPod dock

I always see the Scosche brand at places like Target branding really cheap iPod accessories. I figured it was just third party crap until I actually bought a Scosche car adapter. They actually make some pretty solid hardware. It works way better than the one I got from Monster for like 1/3 the cost.
Ian @ Feb 23rd 2009 9:22PM
lol well im sorry but you did buy monster..

Well I bought the automotive passPORT so that charging could be enabled in the ipod integration of my dad's mercedes c350 4matic 2009 (canadian model) and guess what, for 30$ it didn't even work I had to ship it back to get a refund. Canadian mercedes owner beware!

Glad to hear that they make one of these for auto adapters. I've got a Sony head unit with iPod control in my car, and was disappointed to find that it couldn't charge my 2G Touch. I'll have to grab one next time I'm in the Mac store. (Hopefully soon, my unibody MBP has been in service for a week already...)

So, summary:
A $40 widget lets us use newer iP**s with our older $200 sound docks, and our $250 iPod car integration?
It'll be a Million Seller. Bose and BMW owners will thank you.
AMc @ Feb 25th 2009 7:08AM
Bought a similar charge convertor for my Alpine head unit to allow it to charge my 3G iPhone
$30+ shipping to the UK and my £250 head unit works properly again.
It also has the added bonus that if I start the ignition before I connect an iPod/iPhone the HU doesn't flip to FM or sulk with an error code.
Doesn't fit 'in' a dock though so this is a worthwhile alternative...finally

geeeeeeeeeeeeeeez, OLD iPod docks?!?!?! whoda thunk?

Why can't the companies themselves who sold the speakers make an adapter for the owners instead of letting a third-party do this? The speaker companies, i.e. BOSE, should make an adapter FREE of charge to its owners instead of us having to spend MORE money! It's a Damn rip-off but, unfortunately, it's also a necessity!
Already wrote to BOSE telling them no longer will I buy another of their damn OVERPRICED products!
Thank you!, Scosche and Kensington (who made a similar, LESS expensive adapter) though still costly product so iPod owners do NOT have to throw away their speakers or other iPod accessories!
